India Sales : 2022 (Jan-Mar)

Registrations for the first three months of 2022 were -8% on the corresponding period of 2021. The 'Diff' figure compares three months of this year with the total 2021 share. The data comes from more than one source and that invariably means different ways of categorizing models. The resulting amalgam is as good as I can get.

Ford is exiting the market and Nissan has ended the Datsun brand so the somewhat limited choice the Indian consumer has is that little bit less. The issue is steep protection for local production through tariffs on imports. However, when the local industry is well established as this one now is and the import duty remains, it crosses the line of reasonable protection.

There were few brands that actually increased their share, Tata and Mahindra being notable exceptions.
